He cornered a creature that ended up defending itself in one of the few ways possible. That is probably how a stingray would defend itself against a seal, a creature that eats rays. Had the sting ray struck him almost anywhere else, then Steve Irwin would have survived.
He had a reputation of taking reasonable risks with animals known for danger to humans. There are people who wrestle alligators, animals known to have killed and eaten people. If alligators are in the water, you want to find somewhere else to swim.

Now here's a submission I made for a Darwin Award. At least it was of this incident.

The driver was not wearing a seat belt when he lost control and rolled the car. He was partially ejected through the sunroof and died on scene.
On Tuesday, FOX 2 was speaking with Michigan State Police troopers about a different story when MSP revealed the man had been watching pornography and masturbating while driving. MSP also said the 58-year-old man was not wearing pants at the time of the crash.

Vehicle collisions and distracted driving don't usually qualify, but this is distracted driving to an unimaginable extreme. The schmuck was old enough to know better, and navigating a freeway-to-freeway interchange requires one's hands on the steering wheel. Besides, it's in Detroit at 3 am.

If the numbers alluded to occurred there should be corpses littering Russia and the former USSR? Where are these corpses? Even if there were no paper trail (and there isn't) there should be physical evidence...which seems to be missing.

Russia is still the largest country. Still there is no physical evidence. And yes the FSB knows where the penal colonies (gulags) are.
