The best way to create a grossly-inequitable order is to make everything a fight while ensuring scarcity. Such fits some antiquated cultures.

I figure human instincts were bred for a hunter - gatherer environment, which doesn't seem ideal.  As you say, what worked then isn't best for the moment.  I guess genetic engineering might soon reach the point where we might do something about it.  Seems like a dangerous can of worms.  Do you trust the Government to engineer the perfect citizen?  Would you want Mr and Mrs Robber Baron cooking up a designer baby?

Ah well.  Not an immediate problem.  Just as well.  We've got enough problems.
