Steelworkers turn on Trump: “We’re worse off now than we were” before the election

Donald Trump never tires of taking credit for President Barack Obama’s economy — even if most Americans disagree — but the promises he made to “forgotten” Americans have been nothing but failures.
One group that has been particularly hurt by Trump’s broken promises is steelworkers, whom Trump has repeatedly and ostentatiously shafted.
Trump repeatedly boasted about only using American steel on oil pipelines, even as he specifically exempted the Keystone pipeline from that policy. He promised to pressure China to stop dumping steel in the U.S., only to have steel imports increase under his watch.
Now, United Steelworkers union president Leo Gerard is speaking out against Trump, telling CNN that his membership is “hugely frustrated” with Trump’s failures.
“There’s been no action that has done anything to protect and defend American jobs,” Gerard said. “In some cases we’re worse off now than we were then.”
Indeed, since Gerard appeared with Trump in an Oval Office signing ceremony last April, steel imports have increased, and while the promised investigation was completed just under the deadline last week, the results are being kept secret. Trump has also repeatedly offered to ransom U.S. trade with China in exchange for help with North Korea.
It was also another United Steelworkers leader, Chuck Jones, who was personally attacked for calling out Trump’s epic Carrier failure. Mike Pence, while he was still governor of Indiana, directed a $7 million bribe to Carrier in December 2016, in the form of tax cuts, but that bribe has only resulted in several rounds of layoffs, including another 215 Carrier workers who lost their jobs this month.
But steelworkers are not alone in being abandoned by Trump. Despite pitching himself heavily as a savior to coal miners, his first year in office saw only 370 net coal jobs created. Trump oversaw the outsourcing of a quarter of a million jobs, and the slowest job growth in six years.
The reality of Trump’s promises dawned on many voters after it was too late, but the midterms are coming, and the people Trump has truly forgotten will soon have a chance to remind Republicans of his failures.

He made vague, glowing promises. Now he fails to keep those promises, which is one way to disappoint those to whom he made those promises. A wealthy man, a supposed expert in lining his own pockets, he has promised working-class prosperity as existed in the 1950s by turning the secrets of his trade to service of the worker.
A man who has stiffed subcontractors, he can just as easily stiff those who voted for him. Stiffing people is his way, and he faults others for getting stiffed.

FBI Director Christopher Wray sent a message to agency employees following the release of a previously classified memo alleging abuse of government surveillance powers by the Justice Department, calling on employees to “keep calm and tackle hard.”
“The American people read the papers, and they hear lots of talk on cable TV and social media,” Wray wrote in the message, which was obtained by BBC. “But they see and experience the actual work you do — keeping communities safe and our nation secure, often dealing with sensitive matters and making decisions under difficult circumstances. And that work will always matter more.”
"Talk is cheap; the work you do is what will endure," he continued.
Wray strongly opposed the release of the memo on Friday, and White House aides reportedly worried he would quit if it was released despite his objections.
Wray told FBI employees that they “speak through our work” and stay “laser-focused … even when it’s not easy, because we believe in the FBI.”
“We believe in what it stands for and in what this institution means to people,” he wrote. “And nothing is going to change that.”
The FBI director, appointed by President Trump after former Director James Comey was fired, encouraged employees to “keep doing your great work and keep being the great people you are.”
“I consider it an incredible privilege to work beside you — and that I’m determined to defend your integrity and professionalism every day," he wrote. “Remember: keep calm and tackle hard.”
Wray’s message follows the release of a memo, written for House Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes (R-Calif.) by his staff, which accuses senior Justice Department officials of improperly using information from the so-called Steele dossier to obtain surveillance warrants on a member of the Trump transition team.

Trump announced Friday he approved the release of the memo, calling its revelations disgraceful.
“I think it’s a disgrace,” Trump said. "A lot of people should be ashamed of themselves."
The White House made no redactions to the document, despite reported requests from law enforcement officials.
Trump approved the release of the controversial document despite objections from top officials at the FBI and Justice Department, who said the memo contained misleading, incomplete and erroneous information.
On Wednesday, the FBI issued a rare public statement warning against the expected release of the memo, saying it has “grave concerns” about its contents.
The FBI Agents Association on Thursday release a statement of support for Wray after he reportedly warned the White House against releasing the document.

I suspect that Trump has normalized the use of alternative facts, fake news, and outright lies. People will look to him as an example and say, HE did it, and he was elected president! This is very damaging to our country; a lot worse than what Bill supposedly did to it with his mischief.

Streets near the White House, Capitol, and US Supreme Court have pie-crust paving unsuited for heavy equipment. Load limits on those streets are typical for bridges approaching the end of their serviceable life. They are not made for the passage of military equipment. That's one way to stop any possible coups.

I posted this elsewhere (Political Wire):
Let us remember that November 11, 2018 will be the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I, the second-most destructive war ever and the war that made possible the horrors of Bolshevism, Nazism, and sundry other novel forms of brutal tyranny that made the most destructive war in history and genocidal slaughters a near inevitability.
World War I was the worst possible war at the time, and a calamity whose horror nobody predicted at its start. It is hard to imagine a war that so universally scarred the surviving soldiers. Nobody fully understands why it came to be, but the militarization of so many cultures surely contributed to the horror of the war. Monarchs and presidents were proud of their well-drilled infantry units and of their battleships, and of the rapid development of armament industries nd related big business (including steel and chemicals).
As demonstrated in the next war, World War I gave at best temporary and superficial solutions to the failings of the pre-war world. It weakened the best of men and empowered the worst. Donald Trump, who seems to have little studied history of any kind, attaches himself as much as possible to military pomp and regimentation -- just like the Emperors of Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Russia, all of whose political systems disintegrated at or near the ends of the war. A militaristic culture is spoiling for a fight, and those spoiling for a fight usually get one. It is the same with kings in palaces as it is with angry drunks in seedy saloons.
The least appropriate treatment for the 100th anniversary of the end of what had been called the Great War and the War to End All Wars ("to end all" meaning a superlative in the day) is a display of military prowess. More apt would be contemplation of the stupidity of a militarized culture that easily drifts into pointless war over some affront. Prayer and fasting would be far more apt.
