Fearmongering Rampant - TheNomad - 03-17-2020 I cannot understand how to upload an image to this. I wanted to post a screencap of one of the most popular and well-used news sites and highlight their headlines TODAY to show how using fear is gripping our minds and controlling all of us to be primordial and exponentially paranoid. These are the headlines I wanted to critique. You see words like "warns" and "stranded" and "chaos" that's just a small example. I only picked out there. Every headline has some provocative thing in it. But taken together, it's all meant to cause PROVOCATION not peace of mind. It's there to cause clutching-of-pearls, gasping-of-breath. You have reports of people calling 911 on the coughing, rural town in chaos, lung scans of the young are "terrifying". Even a vague headline about "tempers" another to cause a "AM I TYPE A???" and someone else is bitter that their care is less than that of a prisoner. This headline composition has no purpose but to ALERT, to STOKE FEAR AND TREPIDATION, to DRIVE ADRENALINE, to cause to revert to primal levels of being afraid. Mnuchin warns jobless rate could hit 20% Majority with virus walking around undetected 18 months of social distancing? Stranded travelers struggle to get home Can feds order national quarantine? New York bar, restaurant owners could be JAILED is break lockdown 911 calls about neighbors coughing Upended rural town in chaos Doctor: lung scans of young nothing sort of terrifying Tempers fray in USA People with type A blood more likely to catch? White house calls on military to boost medical response Navy acting hospital ships Soldier in quarantine: "prisoners get better care" Best and worst death toll scenarios SICK MAP SICK MAP? So, we need to know there's a map we can go look at...... where we can see SICK and where it is. Is it near us? Let's go examine the bubbles to see it glopping toward us like The Blob. IT'S COMING! We can't stop it. We're gonna die. It helps no one. My favorite in this list MAYBE........ "Best and worst death toll scenarios". That one makes me to giggle. Let's click it to ruminate the most number of the dead and the least. When I go to Vegas, I like to put AAAAAAAALLLLLLL my money on both red and black and watch the dial spin. Let's get in the middle of it and kick back that bet. 50% odds are the best, baby
RE: Fearmongering Rampant - Bob Butler 54 - 03-17-2020 Of course, the roulette wheel has a couple of green tabs. The house always has to make a profit. If you split your money on red and black, you can at best break even and at worst loose everything. This is about how ignorant TheNomad is. Ignorance is bliss? RE: Fearmongering Rampant - sbarrera - 03-17-2020 Fear sells, I guess. I think really it's death that sells. Thanatos - the death wish. Stories of murder, war, disaster always percolate to the top. This one is bound to dominate feeds for a long time. RE: Fearmongering Rampant - TheNomad - 03-18-2020 (03-17-2020, 10:54 PM)sbarrera Wrote: Fear sells, I guess. righteous, if someone is paying attention, there are archetypes playing out like that in front of us in pop culture. Thanos definitely represents the current order of Prophet who has a vision they will not let go of. Their vision and their desperate mission to complete it is what causes doom. The Avengers are on the other side, they represent everyone else. Within those opposing Thanos is a host of heroes who represent many versions of Hero Nomad Artist And even a few prophets who fight on the other side. I think the story had to create an actual face on which to parallel or mirror Thanos which is why Tony has that thing "Thanos has been inside my head for 6 years" and Thanos being to Tony "you're not the only one cursed with knowledge". But more, Thanos fully represents the lone figure archetype who is on a mission. And the mission decimates everything. There's a lot t draw from in pop culture. Once one stars tugging at archetypes, they are everywhere. They are what makes "stories". The best way forward is to stick to what the science and the doctors say and the facts about how fast and easily the virus spreads and what can prevent it. Speculation beyond this is not helpful. There's a lot there. You have "Avengers" of a huge nature. Of all diversities. It's cool how they have to rise up against the deadly vision of the one (remember, Thanos represents Prophet which is both sides of the red/blue argument). Showing how tough you are to go to work while sick. We have f'd up priorities. Maybe this will show us what good things can be derived from europeans who just don't do that. They have better things to do and care about. but then, european = evil, right? They can't be right, they live in Socialism! oooooooooooooohhhhhhhhhhhhh the dread of community and community-based living. We must resist... and die early from loneliness and being over-worked. And with no savings anyway. What was it all for? A LOT OF PPL ARE WONDERING. It's so independently prideful. RE: Fearmongering Rampant - Eric the Green - 03-24-2020 It's relative. Sometimes and in some places we need more socialism. Sometimes more capitalism. The USA needs more socialism now. RE: Fearmongering Rampant - Bob Butler 54 - 03-24-2020 It also matters which sense of socialism you use. The Western Europe sense of the government helping the people? Or the Communist sense of sticking the word 'Socialist' in your name and pretending you care more about the people than the elites. I would be for the first, against the second, and inclined not to use the word since it is so ambiguous. I've a low opinion of the ordinary person who does not have general knowledge. Because they are so easy to control and we pay for that in voting. Then, when you have learned people, they will do battle over which form or version or definition of socialism you are using. It kind of makes me a bit ill. Is not Socialism meaning "Group" over "Individual"? Wouldn't that be an apt description? We Americans are in truth really independent people who I would describe many as they will give to you, they will help, they will be open, but they don't want anyone telling them how or when to do that. And other many would carry this over to "my taxes go to __________" and I'm not having it. The way I see it, we have ALL of us "agreed" to this almost like a Terms of Service by being an American, we have agreed to support the government structure through taxation. We're arguing about how THEY are, in turn, using it with things labeled as "entitlement" programs. But is that not Socialism? Is not Social Security a form of Socialism? ALL the entitlement programs are. We already have it. It's here. Bernie Sanders spoke openly and freely about not judging something as a whole (Cuba) but looking at how they actually helped their citizens. I liked that. No lies, no dog whistle. Of course, everyone outside of that mentality goes "oooooooooohhhhhhh we cannot move toward Socialism" and that was cowardly. In fact, Sanders was "radical" enough to implement something different instead of a stalled engine. And of course, he got beat down by his own people and the other people for that. Right now, we are seeing mass implementation of "The Group" as I made another thread about this. Right now, the individual liberty is taking a hit, everyone is being asked to be tin soldiers moving along to the grocery store then back home, trusting the president and all those people will work this out. Is this not a mass movement/shift toward Socialism? I mean, we need to be sending up the flares and calling (not emailing) our Senators to make them stop. We must tell them we cannot allow Socialism by isolating. We must prevail with individual ruggedness and the Spirit of America. Ride it out like John Wayne into the Valley, guns blazing. The other way is like France and the Freedom Fries. They needed to be saved. We can't be like them. It means different things to different people, which is why my preferred definition does not matter. If you want to obsess over the definition, go ahead. We can't be like them. I personally devour all French Fries or Freedom Fries or whatever you care to call them that come into my house. No saving. Now, we have a problem. By now there is a pretty sound scientific knowledge on how to solve it. Trial and error solving is what is done come a Crisis. Science helps. Tom Clancy and his character Jack Ryan ran into a similar problem in the novel Executive Orders. Do we isolate in the face of a possible infectious disease? After letting other characters go at it about the Constitution and individual rights and freedoms against what was needed scientifically, the fictional President Ryan concluded that the Constitution was not a suicide pact, that he was going to do what was necessary and be impeached if he was wrong. I sympathized with Clancy/Ryan then, and feel the same now. Now I sympathize that rights are important, but the right to life is first among them. In the various American Crises, those that got it enlisted such as my great uncle Eugene, putting the needs of the country ahead of their own. Today, people are only being asked to keep their distance from each other and in many places to stay home. This seems to be too much for a few. They are willing to murder others and increase the Crisis period and increase the effect on the economy out of pure selfishness. I have no sympathy. Pardon. I suddenly feel like fixing a small plate of fries as a snack. RE: Fearmongering Rampant - beechnut79 - 03-24-2020 (03-24-2020, 06:09 PM)Eric the Green Wrote: It's relative. Remember, this was also the time when we endured the Red Scare, cultural blandness (to the point of nausea) and overbearing oversight of our sexual mores. Economically, the world was pretty good, but economics isn't life. The 2T happened because the conformity was getting too much to bear. Of course, the backlash went too far too, which lead to the neoliberal fantasy we're trying to escape now. Where the last of the items in your first sentence is concerned, we seem to have returned to said overbearing, especially since first the AIDS scare in the mid-80s through to the #Metoo movement which brought down many once considered heroes. Although we may never totally return to the Scarlet Letter mindset, we are IMO a bit too close for comfort. Anyone having a large sexual resume, commonplace not that many years ago, is now highly looked down upon. I do often wonder if a period of relative hedonism might emerge once the restrictions of this period are lifted, with many over eager to make up for lost time. I don't know if we in our current bodies beechnut will see the full return of hedonism likely in the next Awakening starting in the mid-2040s. WICHITA FALLS, Texas (AP) — A Texas man faces federal charges after he made online posts threatening Democrats, including U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, authorities said. Gavin Weslee Blake Perry, 27, of Wichita Falls, was charged Wednesday with transmitting a threatening communication in interstate commerce. According to federal prosecutors, Perry wrote on Facebook that Democrats, including Pelosi, “will be removed at any cost necessary and yes that means by death.” Perry remained jailed Friday and court records do not list an attorney who could speak on his behalf. Federal prosecutors said Perry admitted making the Facebook posts and that he told law enforcement he did so because he wanted to warn Americans to beware of the government. Dumb-dee-dumb-dumb! |
