Beirut Explosion - Bob Butler 54 - 08-07-2020 The closest I can think of to Beirut, an accidental explosion damaging a large part of a port city, is the Halifax explosion in 1917. A ship loaded with explosives for World War I went off. Apparently, the Halifax explosion was the equivalent of 2.9 kilotons to Beirut's 1 kiloton first guess. Halifax wiped out buildings at roughly a half mile radius and resulted in about 2000 killed. My sister once visited Halifax. The explosion still leaves scars. RE: Beirut Explosion - pbrower2a - 08-21-2020 It turns out that the explosion involved a cache of ammonium nitrate and other infamously-unstable chemicals that Hezbollah hoarded in Lebanon. |
