1993/1994: The Cranberries, an indie/folk pop rock band from Limerick, Ireland becomes one of the biggest bands of the 90s.
From their debut album of 1993, Everyone Else Is Doing It, So Why Can't We? And these from their 1994 album, No Need To Argue. One of their most popular songs here, if youtube view counts mean anything, though all of these songs were hits. You can hear the influence of American grunge on this one. It was a close to a musical as an Xer ever gets to.

Ladies that ruled the 90s: If Tori Amos was the nimble, red fairy queen and Kat Bjelland the merciless demon virago, then Canadian singer/songwriter Sarah MacLachlan was the decade's witchy earth goddess, and her breakthrough international hit came out in 1993.

It was not so much a music style as a political, feminist movement that worked through multiple outlets--music, fanzines, art, political action. While I wasn't as fond of the music of the riot grrrls as that of other contemporary girl rocker bands like Babes in Toyland or L7, I admired their purpose. This one was used in a recent pro-Hilary Clinton youtube video that went viral during the primaries until former BK member Tobi Vail issued a copyright infringement notice--I believe she was a Sanders supporter.

Too bad to hear about the "Rebel Girl" Hillary video. I had posted it to the old forum. Not a bad song. For that kind of stuff, both songs are OK. Cautious thumbs up.

She was probably about 7-10 years younger than me and this was her absolute favorite band. She was a very sweet, generous soul. I sometimes wonder how she is doing now. Plus their songs were just really catchy.
