True but we certainly will influence the future to be something quite different I am sure. Just as the boomers did in the 60s to now. Xers also have had their mark to the present and so will millennials. Even more so as I believe that generation is even larger than the boomers.
Too much is attributed to generations when it comes to what happens in the past and future. The future at any time is being created now, by all the generations alive now. In our times, there are plenty of people alive even in the generational type that's supposed to be absent (in our turning, that's the adaptives or artists). And the other three types are all contributing now.
But one generation is not just like another. Just like one piece of music is not just like another. The cycle continues, and which turning you come of age in matters, and which turning you are mature and powerful in matters too. How a generation influences the future depends on which turning they are in when they do it.
The Awakening creates the visions and ideals of where society needs to go. The Crisis carries them out and makes them work in the course of struggle between the new visions and the status quo.
Right now, in the 4T, millennials are helping (along with Xers and Boomers who are still awake) to make the 2T visions real and practical and defeat the status quo. In the next 2T, many millennials will be defenders of the status quo against the new visions, as well as activists for change within the institutions they helped to build during the previous 4T and 1T. But some younger millennials will also be among the instigators of the new 2T visions, when the next 2T arrives.
In order to create a vision of where society needs to go, people must experience an Awakening.
Strauss and Howe described the contrast between Awakenings and Crises and related to the archetype of the battle between the Caesar and the Christ. Millennials (civics/heroes) are more about the Caesar, and Boomers/the next prophets or idealists are more about the Christ.
