Think of the merits of a dog over a gun as a defender:
1. Accurate use of a firearm by a non-criminal in self-defense is no certainty. Self-defense situations in which a potentially-lethal response is necessary are surprises. The would-be defender is often too far from the gun to get to it in time, may not be fully awake, and may be in the dark.
