** 25-May-2019 World View: Long queues of Mount Everest climbers wait to reach summit
The above photo, which was taken last week by someone climbing Mount
Everest, has gone viral. It shows the long lines of people who have almost
reached the summit, and who must now wait in line for hours to complete
the climb.
The climbers are waiting in an area 26,200 feet above sea level called
"The Death Zone." At that point, an exhausted climber must deal with
everything from thin air to vertigo, not to mention high winds,
blinding snow, and freezing temperatures. 17 people have died so far
this year, making it the worst season in decades. Some are blaming
the deaths on overcrowding.
Nepal’s tourism ministry issued 381 climbing permits this year, the
highest number on record. Mount Everest climbers form a major source
of income for Nepal and for the Sherpas who serve as guides.
