Japan is a sleeping Great Power -- the sort of country that can be big trouble if provoked. The Japanese thug empire kicked American @$$ all the way to Guadalcanal and Midway, and it came close to defeating the Allies in the Pacific Theater. A Japanese conquest of Hawaii would have cut off supply lines between the United States and both Australia and New Zealand.
The reason for the defeat of the Japanese thug empire was that it was so thuggish. Thug regimes never win the peace even if they take the territory. Japan is not a thug empire this time.
