I ran into this comment on Reddit that I think sums up best what's going on with Sessions:

Democrats and newspapers know enough to predict how he will defend himself and have set him up to perjure himself. He is not the real target, it's part of a process to get to the real traitors at the top. Because Sessions isn't totally aware of the extent of what's going on, he's walking right into things.
