RE: the best songs ever: the lost years - gabrielle - 09-19-2016 RE: the best songs ever: the lost years - gabrielle - 09-23-2016 "I take pride as the King of Illiterature." Nirvana's final studio album, In Utero, released in 1993. Stranger and darker, yet perversely more pop and melodic. RE: the best songs ever: the lost years - gabrielle - 09-26-2016 1993/1994: The Cranberries, an indie/folk pop rock band from Limerick, Ireland becomes one of the biggest bands of the 90s. From their debut album of 1993, Everyone Else Is Doing It, So Why Can't We? And these from their 1994 album, No Need To Argue. One of their most popular songs here, if youtube view counts mean anything, though all of these songs were hits. You can hear the influence of American grunge on this one. "It's the same old theme since 1916 In your head, in your head, they're still fighting. With their tanks, and their bombs, and their bombs, and their guns, In your head, in your head, they are dying." I am curious to see what you think of it. This movie was very popular among Xers but I don't think a Millie will relate to it very well. This is another one from that movie that I really liked. Of course, I have the movie on VHS https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qa9zJBOqNhs RE: the best songs ever: the lost years - Ragnarök_62 - 09-27-2016 (09-27-2016, 07:42 PM)Bronsin Wrote:(06-17-2016, 02:44 AM)Galen Wrote: I have posted this one before but not where we encountered because you see it was almost never played on the radio. It would be a wonderful time if the Pentagram really did get invaded by druggie space aliens. It was a close to a musical as an Xer ever gets to. RE: the best songs ever: the lost years - gabrielle - 09-30-2016 Ladies that ruled the 90s: If Tori Amos was the nimble, red fairy queen and Kat Bjelland the merciless demon virago, then Canadian singer/songwriter Sarah MacLachlan was the decade's witchy earth goddess, and her breakthrough international hit came out in 1993. I always loved this song, too (also from Fumbling Towards Ecstacy): RE: the best songs ever: the lost years - gabrielle - 10-01-2016 RE: the best songs ever: the lost years - gabrielle - 10-01-2016 1994 RE: the best songs ever: the lost years - Ragnarök_62 - 10-07-2016 From 2007, the last of the "lost years". RE: the best songs ever: the lost years - gabrielle - 10-11-2016 Around 1992/1993 I started hearing the term "riot grrrl": https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Riot_grrrl It was not so much a music style as a political, feminist movement that worked through multiple outlets--music, fanzines, art, political action. While I wasn't as fond of the music of the riot grrrls as that of other contemporary girl rocker bands like Babes in Toyland or L7, I admired their purpose. This one was used in a recent pro-Hilary Clinton youtube video that went viral during the primaries until former BK member Tobi Vail issued a copyright infringement notice--I believe she was a Sanders supporter. RE: the best songs ever: the lost years - gabrielle - 10-11-2016 The Revenge of the Nerds. Weezer's self titled album came out in 1994, was a huge success. It was called the "blue album" to differentiate it from their later albums also titled "Weezer." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Weezer RE: the best songs ever: the lost years - Eric the Green - 10-11-2016 Too bad to hear about the "Rebel Girl" Hillary video. I had posted it to the old forum. Not a bad song. For that kind of stuff, both songs are OK. Cautious thumbs up. Weezer, I can't credit at all. More 3T ennui. Weezer reminds me of a girl who was a coworker of mine. She was probably about 7-10 years younger than me and this was her absolute favorite band. She was a very sweet, generous soul. I sometimes wonder how she is doing now. Plus their songs were just really catchy. RE: the best songs ever: the lost years - gabrielle - 10-12-2016 Beck had his breakthrough hit in 1994. If you don't like this song, then go shave your face with some Mace in the dark. RE: the best songs ever: the lost years - gabrielle - 10-12-2016 Delerium, from Semantic Spaces, 1994. RE: the best songs ever: the lost years - gabrielle - 10-14-2016 90s awkwardness and bad high fives--23 year old Beck (a year older than me) and Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth. Supposedly, the shoe throwing was meant to be a tribute to Beck's grandfather Al Hansen, an artist of the Fluxus movement of the 60s and 70s. http://thequietus.com/articles/06534-thurston-moore-interview Beck's Bob Dylan homage (appropriately enough for today) and ode to 3T commercialism (a theme he revists more eloquently--and more funkily--with Midnite Vultures). Thurston fails at keeping his deadpan in place here. I think I'll just go listen to some of the best songs ever instead. RE: the best songs ever: the lost years - gabrielle - 10-16-2016 Also from 1994. "As I develop the awakening mind I praise the Buddhas as they shine I bow before you as I travel my path To join your ranks, I make my full-time task For the sake of all beings I seek The enlightened mind that I know I'll reap Respect to Shantideva and all the others Who brought down the Dharma for the sisters and brothers I give thanks for this world as a place to learn And for this human body that I know I've earned And my deepest thanks to all sentient beings For without them, there would be no place to learn what I'm seeing There's nothing here that's not been said before But I put it down now so that I'll be sure To solidify my own views And I'll be glad if it helps anyone else out too If others disrespect me or give me flak I'll stop and think before I react Knowing that they're going through insecure stages I'll take the opportunity to exercise patience I'll see it as a chance to help the other person Nip it in the bud before it can worsen A chance for me to be strong and sure As I think on the Buddhas who have come before As I praise and respect the good they've done Knowing love can conquer hate in every situation We need other people in order to create The circumstances for the learning that we're here to generate Situations that bring up our deepest fears So we can work to release them until they're cleared Therefore, it only makes sense To thank our enemies despite their intent The Bodhisattva path is one of power and strength A strength from within to go the length Seeing others are as important as myself I strive for a happiness of mental wealth With the interconnectedness that we share as one Every action that we take affects everyone So in deciding for what a situation calls There is a path for the good for all I try to make my every action for that highest good With the altruistic wish to achieve Buddhahood So I pledge here before everyone who's listening To try to make my every action for the good of all beings For the rest of my lifetimes and even beyond I vow to do my best, to do no harm And in times of doubt, I can think on the Dharma And the Enlightened Ones who've graduated Samsara" |
