People who believe that their political and economic leadership care about them think differently from those who have no cause to believe that the System has nothing for them but poverty, exploitation, and neglect. Children can do well enough if they are raised poor so long as they get their basic needs met (like nutrition, which is fairly easy in the country with the richest agriculture) and get positive attention from the government, especially with competent child care and education.
I have known plenty of people who grew up poor during the Great Depression, and they seem none the worse for having known poverty.
