The British, mainly the English, have an exaggerated sense of their own unique and historic importance; much like those Americans who consider the USA "the exceptional nation." Brexit is a mass, collective ego-trip that so-far none of the other EU countries have indulged in.
Other pundits say that Brexit was an "anti-establishment" vote protesting the lousy economy and current leadership. If so, why did they vote the Tories in with a large majority so recently?
