Morals include:
- not victimizing vulnerable people -- the elderly, children, the handicapped, and the poor
- integrity in business dealings
- not becoming a public charge (Work, dammit!)
- staying sober enough to function, and not giving in to addictive drugs
- insisting upon rational discourse in politics, academia, and news reporting
- honesty in public dealings
- avoiding reckless sex
- thrift (it is far easier to avoid ethical compromises if one has assets)
- recognizing quality education (even if only as trade school) as desirable in its own right
- limiting exposure to mind-rotting entertainment
- personal charity
- refraining from racism and religious bigotry... and sexism
I'd like to see more social equity, but our whole economic system and the command-and-control techniques of our moneyed elite seems to have the fear of destitution as its equivalent of the slave-master's lash.
The ideal subject of totalitarian rule is not the convinced Nazi or the dedicated Communist but instead the people for whom the distinction between fact and fiction, true and false, no longer exists -- Hannah Arendt.
