Rework the map to show counties by population rather than geographical size, and the problem changes dramatically.  Sorry, but a county with very few people is not in a position to dictate to an adjoining one with 10 times as many, so some Red counties will become part of Blue America.  Of course, the opposite will also occur, but not nearly so often.
