I introduced this material in Talk Elections related to Leip's Atlas of Elections, and the color scheme fits that site better than the now-conventional Red for Republicans and Blue for Democrats. Dark shades are for margins of 10%, medium shades for margins of 5 to 10%, and pale shades are for margins under 5%. Leip has a very long view of American elections and sticks with the convention of FDR's time.

Biden won states in shades of red, Trump won those in shades of blue

States toward the bottom are high in poverty, obesity, and smoking, and are generally toward the bottom in educational attainment. Hey! West Virginia now does worse than Mississippi. If you wonder why Texas does so much better than Oklahoma... Texans on the whole are better educated and smoke less.

Indiana, Kentucky, and Ohio have actually had good responses to COVID-19.
The ideal subject of totalitarian rule is not the convinced Nazi or the dedicated Communist  but instead the people for whom the distinction between fact and fiction, true and false, no longer exists -- Hannah Arendt.
