The Dem's have no other option than to try and ignore it while they're in the business of supporting it and receiving kick backs. Boy are you a piece of work.

I think it was mostly the Republicans and their voters who ignored it. If the VA voters chose to accept uncritically this slogan, that is on them.

And if election results depend on the "best messaging" by the candidates, that only means that after decades and decades, that the people of the USA don't know what the real issues are, and have to vote based on the "messages." What the two parties favor and what they oppose could not be more clear by now, and if people refuse to remember, then that is on them and not on the candidates.
