But you had to be in the so-called "in" crowd in order to get away with those things. In the workplace it was usually just the bosses and maybe next in line. The rank and file didn't get away with it anymore btjan one would today. I can recall being jealous of being able to give a female co-worker a back rub, for example. The harder stuff, wouldn't even try it. We have been clearly in the "time to refrain from embracing' (Turn, Turn,Turn) since I would say the mid-1980s.

However, if ACW2 does break out, we will have much bigger fish to fry than to worry whether some guy gives a co-worker a back rub.

We clearly are in a repressive trend now about these subjects. That's just what S&H predicted. Back in the last 4T, in the times in which Lee Harvey Oswald grew up, there was little chance for any affection or connection to happen. Children were often seen but not heard. Sex was so repressed that deviation and sexual abuse was very common, and very hidden. There was no human potential movement or new age therapies around to help people who felt alienated and lonely. Touchy-feeley attitudes didn't even exist.

Now we are going back in that direction again. Hintergrund seems all in favor of this, to the point that he has to read his GenX cynicism into a popular philosophy book about integrating romanticism and rationalism and opening up to intuition. Touchy-feeley is looked down upon and is a term of abuse. The therapeutic movements are drying up amid the millennial generation's retreat into scientism and virtual technology uber alles. Many of them are bullied and become violent misfits and mass shooters, thanks to the new massacre tools the Republicans have given them. These lonely, alienated young people have nowhere to turn and little opportunity. It's all of a piece. But the cycle will turn again, and by the 2040s if someone says younger people are attractive, he won't be subject to insults like I am today by Gen X cynics like Hintergrund. It was not long ago on the old T4T forum that someone called me a pedo because I liked Justin Bieber. She and others were so closed off to what good music sounds like that they could not imagine that a young pop star could make any good music, and were unable to hear it just because he was young.

And yes, I am a boomer and I have some millennial friends (and not necessarily just to be my political "tools"). I like to associate with younger people if I can, as well as those my own age (broadly speaking, I have many "Joneser" and Xer friends too) or even older who are still somewhat hip to the awakening times. It was a noticable trend not long ago that society was becoming age-irrelevant.

I am not that familiar with Justin Bieber but can we say that he is in the current time comparable to the likes of Elvis Presley in his time?

He is a yuge star, that's what they have in common. Other than Elvis, Bieber is stupid and boring, however.

Bieber has a boring and stupid side to him. Few of us do not. Of course, no-one who actually listens and can hear and appreciate the song in my siggie would say that he's only boring and stupid. But Elvis is not the best comparison; they don't have much in common except their stardom and influence on a young generation. Bieber is most-influenced by Motown artists and the Beatles.

And it's still based on their narcissism. Everything they do, have and make, is the best thing since Jesus. So naturally, their kids are the bestest kids ever, even if they're more like the product of incest. And if you dare to contradict them, you'll be considered evil by them.

That's because, hey, we ARE the best. Talkin' bout my generation. Don't try to dig what we all say, just fade away. We're the hippest, man. And you don't often agree with me, I know, so does that mean you're evil, hintergrund? I'm thinkin' that one over.... Wink

I know we aren't so good. But you guys in Gen X, I don't think you can afford to stand on a soapbox and criticize other generations either.

Say Hintergrund, aren't Gen Xer supposed to be no-nonsense individualists and pragmatic? So why do you think all boomers are bad? Why do you hate boomers, if you do? What about the idea that all members of a group are not the same, and can be evaluated or looked upon as individuals?

The archetypical Boomers (i.e. narcissistic, preachy) might be a minority, and I perfectly know that there are some positive exceptions. S&H, some FB guys I know, and even at least one Boomer poster here. But since those positive exceptions are too few and the majority does nothing to stop the narcissists etc, I think it's OK to write "Boomers" when a fairer term would be "the narcissist, preachy minority of the Boomers which ruins the reputation of all of them".

I understand why many Australian Millennial's and Generation Zers are antagonistic towards the Boomer generation. Because here in Australia the Boomers in their time ruling the country at least a Federal level, have done a lot of damage which will take decades to fix. Also, they have generally failed to act like responsible emotional mature leaders, which is something that our Millennial's and Generation Zers are often very angry about.

There is also the fact that Aussie Boomers overall, are a quite self-entitled greedy generation, who are willing to impoverish Millennial's and Generation Zers, so they can keep receiving government benefits which they see as an entitlement. Not to mention they are willing to vote for tyrants, who are happy to destroy the eco-system of the continent, such as Scott Morrison in order to keep receiving said entitlements.

I predict once the Millennial's and Generation Zers start writing historical narratives about the Boomer generation, it is not going to be a terribly flattering one.

Boomers get to win one too.  We screwed the pooch on enough things; this is one area where we deserve some credit.

Actually, they are getting on awfully rotten.

What happened?

Boomer parents get along with their Millennial children better than they did with their GI parents, I think was the point. Although actually the tightest bonds I've seen in my personal life are between GenX parents and their Millennial kids.

The Boomer v. Millennial Meme War could be seen as really being about the new saeculum killing off the old saeculum with the "Boomer generation" as a proxy for the old ways. So only members of older generations who aren't on board with the new Modern Family Values are being targeted.

From an individual standpoint, I'm sure most millennials don't have much issue with their boomer parents/grandparents and generally get along. But from a generational viewpoint, the general consensus among millennials and gen z is that boomers have run the world into the ground and will leave their mess for the younger generations to clean up. I wouldn't say they're rebelling but simply waiting for all of them to die off so that they're finally out of the way.

The Boomers (and Silents) have created a huge mess, they're still at it, and it doesn't matter whether they're evil or just incompetent. We'd be better off of they didn't exist. It's no coincidence that Highs are Highs: The "Prophets" are kids and can't create a mess!

Interesting that Boomers are now on the other side of the generation gap. But despite this whole new meme, the chasm between them and their mostly GI parents during their youth was much louder than a similar gap today is. But I have often pointed out that in the long run the Boomers ended up becoming most of what they had ridiculed during their youth, becoming even more beholden to corporate muscle even more than their GI fathers had been with the exception of not committing themselves to lifetime employment within their chosen organization. And of course very few Boomer women became the vaunted Suzy Homemaker which was a hallmark of GI women in the immediate postwar years.
