Back in 2006, when my 1994 cohort started middle school, she received a nice, shiny silver flip phone. The norm back then was that since middle school kids would be arriving home from school before their employed parents, they should have a cell phone. Of course, they used their cell phones to constantly text each other. And the phones were pretty basic -- you could phone, text, or take lousy pictures.
