Reports now indicate 8 dead, with other reports giving numbers as high as 11
Congregants near the Tree of Life Synagogue in the Squirrel Hill neighborhood of Pittsburgh were ambushed on Saturday morning by a man who opened fire with multiple weapons. According to on-scene reports, the shooter shouted “All Jews must die” as he was firing into those present.
At 11:30 ET, news reports indicate that 8 people have died, and 12 are wounded including at least 3 police officers who responded to the shooting. First reports of the shooting came in around 10:45 ET, while the web site for the Tree of Life shows that Shabbat services began at 9:45, suggesting that the gunman may have assaulted the congregation as the service was ending. Reports indicate that four people were killed on the main floor of the synagogue. The shooter then killed more people in the basement of the synagogue. One person may have been killed outside the building.
The shooter remained active for several minutes after officers appeared at the scene, but surrendered after having been wounded. Reports indicate that he was taken alive, but injured and was “crawling” when taking prisoner. Early reports are that the shooter was armed with an AR-15 style semi-automatic assault rifle, the same type of weapon used in many other mass shootings, as well as multiple handguns.
The Tree of Life Synagogue is the largest Jewish congregation in the Squirrel Hill area, which is one of the most heavily Jewish neighborhoods in the city. The statement of witnesses regarding the gunman’s shouts leaves little doubt about the purpose of this mass murder. Following the shooting, police departments in other cities, including the NYPD, ordered protection provided to synagogues and other facilities in their areas.
The suspect has been described as “a white male who has a beard.” Some reports have indicated that the shooter is a 46-year-old local resident. More information when it has been confirmed.

Robert Bowers, the Pennsylvania man accused of a fatal shooting at a Pittsburgh synagogue Saturday morning, posted prolifically online about conspiracy theories and made repeated threats to Jews.
Bowers frequently wrote on the social network Gab, where he made a specific threat against Jews hours before allegedly conducting Saturday’s attack.
In the post, Bowers said that the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society, a humanitarian aid nonprofit group that provides assistance to refugees, brought immigrants to the United States to do violence against others.
“Screw your optics, I'm going in," he wrote.
Bowers frequently posted about the “migrant caravan,” a group of several thousand refugees walking to the U.S.-Mexico border from Honduras to seek asylum. Preventing refugees in the caravan from entering the U.S. has been a major talking point among both right-wing commentators and President Donald Trump, who has spoken about it in recent pre-midterm election stump speeches.
Bowers’ anti-Semitic posts and his apparent disdain for the caravan are tied to a viral image that appears to show refugees hopping onto the bed of a truck that had a Star of David visible on the side. The image has been widely shared on far-right forums like 4chan and the Russian propaganda operation USA Really. He reposted a screenshot of a video of the caravan that aired on Fox News, as well as other networks, that does not mention the symbol.
Bowers frequently reposted conspiracy theories about the image of the truck and reposted comments about it from other Gab users....
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – Eleven people have been killed and a number of others injured after a shooting at The Tree of Life Synagogue in Squirrel Hill on Saturday.

Police sources tell KDKA’s Andy Sheehan the gunman walked into the building and yelled, “All Jews must die.” Sheehan’s sources confirmed that eleven people were dead. No children are among the deceased.
Bowers was reportedly armed with an AR-15 and two handguns.
The initial call to 911 was made around 9:54 a.m. and officers were dispatched to the scene within a minute.
When officers arrived, the gunman reportedly shot at them, forcing officers to use their vehicles as a shield.
He also credited the first responders with preventing this from being a bigger tragedy than it already is.

KDKA’s Meghan Schiller reports that a suspect, a heavy-set white male with a beard, surrendered. The SWAT team had been talking with the suspect, and he was crawling and injured. It is unclear the extent of his injuries. He was taken into custody about 20 minutes after the initial call to 911.
KDKA sources confirm Sheehan that the suspect is 48-year-old Robert Bowers. It is believed that he acted alone.
News is still coming in, but we know that at least 10 people have been killed, that the shooter was a white man who entered the sanctuary yelling “kill all the Jews,” and that he might have specifically been motivated by the synagogue’s work supporting refugees and immigrants
