The plantation elite then, and the financial elites now, know exactly how to manipulate these xenophobic sheeple.
The only problem with this analysis that at least as many of these "sheeple" are white ethnics from in and around the Northeastern and Rust Belt cities, descendants of people who weren't even in this country when The War Between The States went down.
You have a point. In addition to the classic hillbillies, there are now a new class of hillbillies, the so called Northern ethnics whose hatred of blacks has made them go insane.
Many may be afraid that their precious children will marry and have children by blacks. If one has any discernible ancestry in sub-Saharan Africa, then whatever culture one's other heritage one's ancestors had does not matter. (An exception may be among Jews if the religion is still Jewish, in which case the religion overpowers 'race'). Such is a corollary of the One-Drop rule. We all know that black people just can't get J S Bach (irony intended).
It's the black middle-class that is more of a threat to 'racial purity' (ironically it is American blacks who typically have some discernible white ancestry and are thus 'impure') than is the vile, repugnant street thug. For some white people marrying into the black middle class would be an improvement in their lives. A black street thug might attract white low life or impregnate a white female through a rape (pregnancy to be solved with abortion or adoption), but that requires a successful crime. It's the black person who can appreciate Bach or Puccini who might entice a white person who loves Bach or Puccini into marriage.
The ideal subject of totalitarian rule is not the convinced Nazi or the dedicated Communist but instead the people for whom the distinction between fact and fiction, true and false, no longer exists -- Hannah Arendt.
