The operating document here is the Declaration, which says a people have a right to rebel against a government that they feel does not serve their interests. They were no more or less justified than the rebels in 1776. Both they and the rebels of '76 were guilty of treason and could be justifiably hanged for it. The difference is the rebels won while the Confederates did not.
