Some women (and regrettably girls, a reference to teenagers unready for the responsibilities of motherhood) had children out of wedlock, mostly out of spectacular error and those children usually ended up with wholly-inadequate mothers. Some kids got single parents through widowhood (without so many pathologies) and some through divorce (the kids often became resentful, manipulative monsters).
