Let me take a stab at it.  

Freedom is the ability to do as you please without interference from anybody, including the government.  The autocratic powers, the Nazi and Communists, did not live up to this.

The Founding Fathers Wrote:We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.

Now if you do any of the above things, the government is telling you what to do.  If you are providing a common defense, you have to obey orders.  If you are establishing justice, you can’t rob people.  If you are promoting the general welfare, you have to pay taxes.  Still, all these restrictions on freedom can be reasonable.

It is just that all folks don’t agree on what is reasonable.
