What's going on with you, part II...
well, tomorrow I go to see the specialist in Texas. I got here yesterday and fly home after the appointment. I'm nervous and hopeful all at the same time. I spent a lot of time, and money to get here on a chance to get this crap under control. The relaxation has been great. I've napped and watched netflix and read a bit. mostly enjoyed the alone time to unwind and not do a damn thing. Here's hoping. I'll let ya'll know what the doc says after I see her tomorrow.

Tara, glad you are doing better. go easy, you don't want to make it worse. trust me on this score. listen to your body.

Hi, I'm back! I haven't been on the forum at all lately because I was busy with school and, even though I'm still attending, hopefully I can make enough time so I can participate in this forum at least occasionally. I just finished my first semester and now I'm in my second.

I feel really guilty I wasn't on the forum during some recent historical events (most notably Trump's election and inauguration), because I would've loved to participate in some lovely discussion! I hope you guys could catch me up on what was going on in the forum since I've been off for 6 months!

I also wish the best for Tara and Dani! I hope you guys are feeling alright!

Good luck with the treatments  that you have chosen to take. May you get healthy enough to protest one or more misdeeds of the Trump regime!

So I finally found this new version of the Forum. I had last posted in the old one in March about the regeneracy. I was a frequent user of the old, killed forums in the late '90's and early 00's, though less so when I got started on a Ph.D. in the late 00's early teens. I have two posts I kept elsewhere from prior to the election, and if anyone is moving some of archives, I would be glad to put them there. Just let me know!

I am happy we are doing this, though I am sorry to lose all of the history of the old forums.

Anyway, I am glad to find this and glad to be back! Smile

I attended the March for Science in Lansing, Michigan... people had very clever signs, as you might expect from nerdy types.

Science permeates everything from agriculture to medicine; science has the tools of statistical verification for which crass ideologues have little use.

You are awfully young to be dealing with that.  Hope it turns out well.

Yeah i have had this since i was 15 but recently it has been particularly bad and the medication has been upped but it is not working anymore. So I have accepted the offer of the operation to correct it. Yes I hope it turns out well too and that they do not slip up as it can be dangerous. But having this condition is also dangerous too. Thanks, Galen.

I hope you know that we're all there in you corner, rooting for you all the way.  I hope the religious typesa are also praying, since this seems to be the perfect time to do that.

Best of luck in all ways.

I may have thwarted a crime yesterday: child endangerment. I was at a gas station for a fill-up, and I saw a boy between the ages of six and eight run away from his parents' (or whatever the combination was) SUV. His mother called him back to the car with an angry, obscenity-laced tirade. His father asked him whether he was willing to let his father lose his job. First of all, you do not use profanities in talk with a child. Second, I can't imagine an employer who wouldn't expect his employee to risk some time at work to protect his child. (If anything, if I found that an employee had put his child at risk I would fire that employee because putting a child at risk would be a crime, and I would be putting my company at risk of a lawsuit). I went into the filling station and told the clerk what was going on. She called the police. I went out to fill the tank -- slowly, watching what was going on and hoping that the cops would arrive.

I had no idea of what the circumstances were, but on the whole if I have a bad feeling about something, the situation really is bad. It might not help my view of the situation that I saw the sort of child-raising that I hold in contempt: extremely authoritarian parents who end up with unruly, rebellious children. But I am also in Meth Country, so who knows what else is going on? That child was in fear of something -- something for the police to determine.

I don't know whether those people figured that I was watching them while I gassed up... their behavior did improve, and they left before the cops could get there. But the local police did get the plate number from them. I hope that this family has gotten a visit from the police and social services. I thought that the child was in danger at the least of some abuse.

That was my concern. There are many scenarios that  I can imagine, and few of them are benign, in the situation that I saw. There could be a nasty dispute on the issue of child custody. There could be abuse. I once saw a mother spank her son's bare bottom in my view in the parking lot of a grocery store. I called the cops on that one. It is simply stupid to so humiliate a child in public. The problem isn't that I saw it happen. I simply recognize my responsibility to a helpless, vulnerable, impressionable child.

Tough luck on the parents. I do not want them to get off easy. I want them to have to learn what is acceptable and effective child-rearing and what isn't. Maybe they will need to take junior-college courses on child development in which one learns without ambiguity that fear and intimidation do more harm than good. Child development is one of the courses I would love to see mandated in the expansion of K-12 to K-14 education. It is a fair assumption that everyone will encounter children in circumstances in which the children are at risk of abuse or other harm even if one does not sire, bear, or teach children.

It's in the hands of the police and social services now -- at least, so I hope. One of the few positives of this time is that we have much lesser tolerance for child abuse than was recently the case. Nobody has the excuse that "the Bible says 'spare the rod and spoil the child'". Beaten children all too often become brutes as adults.

The happy ending is that the parents learn a lesson. But happy endings are far from usual expectations when people have entrenched their very bad habits. Fines, probation, and community service? Those parents are welcome to fault me. I would rather that they curse me than that they abuse their child.

Children are precious -- lest we be doomed as a nation, culture, or whatever division is relevant.

I had plans to see the total eclipse -- except that my brother got the wrong day off... and I had a crippling gout attack. Right foot, so I couldn't drive.

You know gout. If a secret police agency could induce gout upon someone, then it could get people to confess to anything.

At the worst I made a sardonic joke about it:

"I confess! Ted Kaczynski (Unabom) had an accomplice that nobody knows about it -- and I was it!"

Indeed so. Many schools closed. I am OK, but decided to stay indoors today. The fire is almost 200 miles north of me, but the Bay Area is getting most of its smoke. The Camp Fire that destroyed Paradise is now 50% contained. Going slowly.
