Iraq (the Iraqi army) proved to be incompetent and incapable of defending itself and unable to do much about stopping it with the exception of the Kurdish region. ISIS was a threat to us here, so ISIS had to be eliminated with the use of our military vs relying on their military. We need two types of military these days. We need a rapid response military apparatus like we have over there now and a regular military apparatus that we are rebuilding/ recruiting/ beefing up and reequipping/modernizing right now and then we need the national guard to fill in the gaps and help out at home during major crisis's that occur here.(01-18-2020, 11:42 PM)John J. I wouldn't say this: sectarian issues were responsible for the rise of the Islamic State, which was nothing if not violent. Iraq just happened to be able to con the US into taking care of that issue for them.
