A Story on how gun companies advertize to young men was broadcast today on PBS Newshour with Paul Solmon. Opinions on both sides were interviewed. Is getting an AR-15 "getting your man card" and boosting your machismo if you are a young man, as the ads say?

https://www.pbs.org/newshour/show/firear...-consumers

But it brings up the issue for folks like Jason Black and Classic Xer to consider.

What does it mean to be a man? Is manhood really increased by owning and using a military weapon?

What is it to be a man? To be aggressive, and a good fighter? To be strong physically? To be brave?

To be able to defend your family or yourself against criminals? If you need a gun to do that, what does that say about the USA that has ten or a hundred times more guns than other societies? Does the USA have more crime? Do rural red states have more crime? Is that why they have more guns and oppose gun control so obsessively? Or vice-versa? Do we have more guns because we have more crime? Or vice versa? Do we have more crime because we have more mental illness (which we don't)? Or do we have more guns because we have a second amendment? Or more gun advertising? Or because conservatives (or liberals) are making guns a political issue? Can we minimize the number, the horror and the deaths caused by mass shootings? (in fact there are now thousands of them every year now, and even one is too many) "How many deaths does it take 'till he knows, that too many people have died?" -- Bob Dylan

Are ammosexuals concerned about their manhood? Is this because they are homosexual? Or are they anti-homosexual or homophobic? Afraid they may be gay? And is there really anything wrong with that?

Do insecure men feel the need to identify with a larger group and its success, to substitute for ones own manhood? A sports team? A nation and its army?

Are there better ways to develop manhood than owning weapons? What about taking testosterone pills? Exercize? Martial arts or other training? Viewing porno or otherwise arousing libido?

What is it to be a man? Is it really so different from being a woman? To have integrity, and willingness to stand and defend your ideas? To be considerate about more than yourself and your own needs and desires? To be able to defend yourself? How is all of that any different from being a woman? Or non-binary?

Well, Ricky Shiffer fought the law -- and the law (Ohio State Police) won.

He was a Trump supporter and a loony.

I can think of more valid rites of passage. Some have nothing to do with gender -- like voting, getting a college degree (even if 'only' a vocational certificate), getting credit approval, completing a full year on even a menial job, getting one's first pay raise, getting married, joining the Armed Services, etc.

Knocking someone up or getting knocked up out of wedlock, getting busted for DUI or drugs, going to jail, or getting an STD isn't. Neither is smoking a cancerette or getting drunk.

Getting a firearm isn't unless one has a legitimate reason to have one, such as being a sport hunter or "light infantry".

Lots of women own guns. Lots of them are familiar with guns and lots of them have been trained how to use or know how to use them too. Oh, lots of them even hunt with them too these days. BTW, a Left Wing pussy like yourself can own a gun too. I'm sure there lots of them living in this country today. Oh, I'm sure there are lots of men and women of all races own them these days too. Oh, I'm even sure lots of minorities of all kinds including LGTBQ's own them too. I assume that you are aware of these facts being true right. The question you had is why so many now? Why are lot of Americans (the highest amount in our history) of all kinds buying guns now? If I have to answer that question for you then you must either be deaf, dumb and blind and incapable of knowing what's been going on since Biden won the Democratic primary or someone incapable of understanding much of anything these days or you must have your head stuck in the sand or stuck up your ass or most likely stuck up someone else's ass in layman's terms term. Last but not least, you must a Left Wing partisan hack who is into spreading Left Wing propaganda or someone who's making money via political affiliation aka a Crony Capitalist aka true fascist of sorts living off the Democratic system that's in place. I assume that you know what I'm talking about since you've been doing it and making money off your political affiliation with it for quite a while ( at least as long as I've known you) now via non profits.

As far as being a man and what separates the men from the boys (young males in development so to speak) and the blue childults and girly men aka the bulk of the Left Wing males aka highly insecure males on the Democratic side so to speak. In case you are wondering, men don't over react to much of anything that seems to upset so many these days. Men don't back down to much of anything or anyone either. Men don't rollover or run away from trouble a lot or very much either. And men don't give up the fight and/or quit as easily as the males on today's Left either. Men aren't afraid to actually fight/die for those they love or what they believe in, they're not afraid to possibly get hurt or possibly die either. You already know/ should have learned that with with me and the bulk of the Republican base you've grown to despise/hate over the years. You haven't seen Us get violent and don't want to ever see Us become violent either. We will turn your world upside down You see, we currently outnumber/outgun the Left Wings criminal factions by a significant amount. The way I see it, the moderate Democrats will find themselves with a few choices, stay with the do nothing Democrats and meet their political demise or resign with honor and distinction before 2024 or switch parties and join with Us (the growing Purple majority that exists in the country that continues to grow and give the Left Wingers fits). You say that you're up against Reds but in reality you are up against a growing number of younger Purples. A relatively large group of younger Americans who could give two shits about who is what, what skin tone, gender and so forth that's largely character driven and merit based who aren't deaf dumb and blind who are aware that it's their future and the future of their children that are now at stake.

BTW, I wonder where that woman lives and how dangerous it is to live where she lives? I got the impression she lives in a blue community of their own making so to speak. Also, she doesn't seem to know much about Us as usual. Also, she and the host don't seem to know the obvious difference between the LEGAL semi-automatic rifles that look like weapons of war and the real weapons of war depicted in the snip it video of real soldiers using their real weapons of war. Once again, no one in their right mind wants the real weapons to become the norm so to peak. Also, no one in their right mind wants some sicko to get their hands on a legal firearm that may look like a real weapon of war and then use it to kill a bunch of children inside their school classroom or use it to kill a bunch of adults in a bar or a bunch of people at some concert or some military base either. You're right about mental health and it's role in most of the mass killings that we've seen in recent years.

The Second Amendment needs to be repealed and rewritten, at the least to contain a non-discrimination clause, to allow licensing of gun-possessors (vehicle drivers' licensing tests are basically tests of intellectual maturity; I found the test easy when I was sixteen, and I had to figure how it could be difficult. It is difficult for a not-very bright 16-year-old or a marginally-retarded adult whom one would not want having hands on a steering wheel, a key in the ignition, and feet at the accelerator and brake pedals. I could have passed the written part of a driver's licensing exam even before I was a teenager.

I am reasonably certain that a test analogous to the written test for a driver's license could be designed for something that, like a motor vehicle, can kill if misused.

Quote:As far as being a man and what separates the men from the boys (young males in development so to speak)  and the blue childults and girly men aka the bulk of the Left Wing males aka highly insecure males on the Democratic side so to speak.

If I lived in bear country I would own a firearm. If I were in the sheep business I would own a gun. Guns, like motor vehicles, are suited only for mature adults -- the sorts of people who would still feel bad if the person that the person who broke into their house had a string of sex offenses. and was in possession of a "rape kit" at the time of his demise.

You contradict yourself by saying that women are competent to keep and bear arms, yet "sissy" men are incompetent to keep and bear arms. The troublesome people with firearms are  all too often those ultra-macho brutes. I am more concerned about the incel who is underfed and pathologically masculine, like Ryan Lanza. Anorexic females hurt only themselves and their loved ones through their self-starvation. Some of the mass shooters seem to be anorexic men.

As a deterrent, dogs are more mobile, stealthy, swift, strong, powerful, and agile than we are. Their fangs of paw and mouth are much like those of bears and Big Cats. They have keen senses and rouse easily, and they can go from docile to having the savage ferocity characteristic of the predators kept in the securest cages in zoos. They know our weaknesses well, and they are fearless. Breaking into a dog-infested house might as well be entry into a predator enclosure of a zoo. Even if dogs are not man-eaters, they can maul people badly.

So imagine this situation. You are alone in the darkness of night at your home. You hear breaking glass. You rouse with difficulty, and your night vision is poor. (We have color vision, but that makes us practically blind at night, unlike a dog). Are you sure that you could handle a gun well under that circumstance? To a dog, burglars, robbers, and rapists might as well be meat.

Quote:In case you are wondering, men don't over react to much of anything that seems to upset so many these days.

Smart men, and gender identity means far more to stupid people than to smart people, often over-react. Violent crime is typically by stupid people because

  1. Smart people have other means of getting what they want, whether sex, pleasure, or economic rewards
  2. Smart people generally find legal sanctions such as fines and imprisonment adequate deterrents to crime
  3. Stupid people overestimate their chances of success (Dunning-Kruger) at almost anything, including crime and escape from detection.

Quote:Men don't back down to much of anything or anyone either. Men don't rollover or run away from trouble a lot or very much either. And men don't give up the fight and/or quit as easily as the males on today's Left either.

Then why do the Armed Services tell soldiers to run from someone trying to pick a fight? Could it be that brawling is not an accepted part of military life? Assault on a superior officer is a serious military offense, but not a civilian offense as such. I thought myself a coward for running away from fights, including gay-bashing. I might try to break up a fight, but such takes real courage and principle.  I've run away from plenty of fights and I have only one broken bone to show for something that was a strictly athletic event.

Quote:Men aren't afraid to actually fight/die for those they love or what they believe in, they're not afraid to possibly get hurt or possibly die either.

Momma Cat has something to say to do to a dog that exudes a desire to have one of her kittens as an easy meal.

Quote:You already know/ should have learned that with with me and the bulk of the Republican base you've grown to despise/hate over the years. You haven't seen Us get violent and don't want to ever see Us become violent either.

So why do so many Democrats hate Donald Judas Iscariot Trump? Rather than wanting to beat him up, we wold rather let the legal system do its thing.  We liberals generally believe in law and order even at the expense of some visceral feeling.

Quote:We will turn your world upside down  You see, we currently outnumber/outgun the Left Wings  criminal factions by a significant amount.

We liberals have largely given up on the stereotyped "bleeding heart" meme that says that people become criminals due to racism and oppression. Multitudes of people born to experience racism and economic hardship do not become criminals. We rely upon the cops to suppress crime.

Quote:The way I see it, the moderate Democrats will find themselves with a few choices, stay with the do nothing  Democrats and meet their political demise  or resign with honor and distinction before 2024 or switch parties and join with Us (the growing Purple majority that exists in the country that continues to grow and give the Left Wingers fits).

Your John Birch Society/ Qu Qlux Qlan/ GOP is close to the "Raging Fascist" zone for which we sober liberals are the antithesis. If anything, many of us Democrats are adopting the sorts of virtues that Republicans used to hold that we did not recognize. We are much closer to being sober conservatives than is a raging fascist like you.  You use rage-filled language against people who have done nothing to you.  As we contemporary liberals create a social order with much to defend we will find a new conservative splitting from an unwieldy Democratic Party.

Quote:You say that you're up against Reds but in reality you are up against a growing number of younger Purples. A relatively  large group of younger Americans who could give two shits about who is what, what skin tone, gender and so forth  that's largely character driven and merit based who aren't deaf dumb and blind who are aware that it's their future and the future of their children that are now at stake.

Your Party scares "purple" America, and your Party has little to offer most of us. .

Most gun-control advocates don't know much about guns except that they maek murder incredibly easy. Then  again, most of the discussion on the appropriateness of a crackdown on drunk driving came from people not experts in the harmacological effects of alcohol, either.

Your Party scares "purple" America, and your Party has little to offer most of us. .

Quote:BTW, I wonder where that woman lives and how dangerous it is to live where she lives? I got the impression she lives in a blue community of their own making so to speak. Also, she doesn't seem to know much about Us as usual.

Ad hominem!

Quote: Also, she and the host don't seem to know the obvious difference between the LEGAL semi-automatic rifles that look like weapons of war and the real weapons of war depicted in the snip it video of real soldiers using their real weapons of war. Most gun-control advocates don't know much about guns except that they maek murder incredibly easy. Then  again, most of the discussion on the appropriateness of a crackdown on drunk driving came from people not experts in the harmacological effects of alcohol, either.

The Red's scare/concern me less than the Blues these days. Unlike the Blues, the Reds are constitutionally limited and seem to be able to accept that as being the Law of the Land. On the other hand, the Blues seem to be unable to accept that all and seem to be hell bent on changing it and establishing themselves as the Law of Land. You're seem pretty dumb for a so-called college boy aka so called smart person. Read what you said about the Second Amendment and tell me you're not a Left Winger again. I say that because you missing obvious signs that I've pointed out relating to fascism and obvious truth relating to yourself aka social (socialist) Democrats of the industrial era. Unlike the Reds, the Blues actually have the power and a system in place to fundamentally change things for the worse and destroy the entire country during the process in my opinion.

Dude, if you had broken your finger while punching a bully instead of breaking it in gym class or whatever, you would have gained some respect at the bully's expense. I defeated my first bully in third grade by doing it dad's way instead of mom's way. I defeat the second in fifth grade with a combination of mom's way and dad's way. It turned out that the bully couldn't handle the sight of his own blood which ended the fight and his reign. He didn't mind seeing mine coming out of me but could not handle the sight of his coming out of himself. He was big and he knew how to fight but he had never been in a fight with someone like me. BTW, the third grade bully's reign ended too and he is one of my better friends today.

Rarely do we have perfect knowledge, but sometimes we must act with it. 95% certainty is often good enough, as it was with the connection between smoking and cancer at one point. Yes, we have anecdotal claims by some that smoking has never caused them any problems or that they actually drive better with a drink "for the road". Anecdotal claims are much deprecated in science because they are worthless.
You fail to understand the difference between such diametric opposites as social democracy and fascism. You are not alone. Commies used to call social democrats "social fascists". Social democracy comes with assumptions that the government is responsible for the welfare of the non-rich. Fascism works only for the rich and powerful in business at the expense of working people and small-scale businesses and farms. We "blues" recog
nize that for a system to survive it must offer something desirable.

Like most fascists you have extreme pessimism about human nature (that except for a return to the "glorious" past we eliminate modernity in favor of something that fit the fascist clique well. That's how the KKK sees race relations: put you-know-what people back into slavery and all will be wonderful. You also have an obsession with physical toughness.
I've known of some of those bullies, and news reports that some of them have been sent to prison for crime ensure that they face the biggest bully of them all: the penal system. Bullies typically find fresh victims after a victim leaves his domain. I can think of some that I knew as a child ending up (without really growing up) as the sorts who get into bar-room brawls.  I admit to some cowardice: I am wary of bars unless I know the bar for something else. The American Legion or Knights of Columbus have nice, safe bars in which good behavior is a reasonable expectation by customers.
At my age I prefer having some respect from my physician. I am physically active; I do not smoke; I drink rarely and little at a time.
The ideal subject of totalitarian rule is not the convinced Nazi or the dedicated Communist  but instead the people for whom the distinction between fact and fiction, true and false, no longer exists -- Hannah Arendt.
