There is a story that there was once a great monarch who charged his wisest man to write him a sentence, to ever be in view, that would be true in all times and circumstances.  It would console him when he was sad, and chasten him when he was proud.  After some consulting amongst themselves, they presented him with a ring on which were inscribed the words, "This too shall pass."
