Is there ever a 'buffer' between saecula?
Posted by: nguyenivy - 02-27-2022, 04:11 AM - Forum: Turnings - Replies (1)

Like some stretch of time after a 4T is over but before the 1T begins? Or do they usually overlap/run into each other? I imagine after WW2 & the US Civil War / other 4Ts in the past there must've been some stretch of 'now what' / 'where do we begin?' period where recovery was in planning stages but hadn't yet began like the time after a big hurricane passes but before damage is assessed & clean-up/rebuild begins. Perhaps the experience plays out differently for the 'winners' vs 'losers'.

Russia invades Ukraine, threatens The West
Posted by: Eric the Green - 02-25-2022, 05:17 PM - Forum: General Political Discussion - Replies (60)

Russia invaded Ukraine at about 6 am Moscow time Feb 24, 2022. Our world has changed. A monster dictator is on the loose and he has proven he will not stop until he restores the Soviet Union, bringing on a new Cold War and probably a hot war. The West has been weak in stopping him. We didn't stop him in Syria. We didn't stop him in his annexations so far. There may have been only so much we were willing or able to do, then. We could have offered Putin a deal this month of no Ukraine NATO membership in exchange for no more Russian threats to Ukraine. I doubt he would have accepted it, and we didn't offer it. Putin's aim as the new Russian Tsar is restoration of the Soviet Union and the Russian Empire, and to support his fellow dictators everywhere as he already does. Putin now sees NATO as weak, divided and vulnerable to all kinds of attacks. We can't afford to be weak anymore. If we don't stop Putin in Ukraine, then he will invade the Baltic countries, and war with Russia will proceed. China will see us as weak too and attack Taiwan. Putin has already threatened nuclear attack against anyone who "interferes." The time for weakness is over.

I think it's too late for diplomacy, unless his war in Ukraine quickly becomes a quagmire for him. The USA and The West must do everything possible to make it a quagmire. We can only negotiate with a monster through strength. We must supply the Ukraine freedom fighters with more weapons, including hand held rockets of the kind that defeated Russia in Afghanistan, and more air power and missiles. The Ukrainians can come in and out of Poland to be supplied. Above all we must have tougher sanctions. So far, as of Feb.25, Biden's sanctions have been too weak. We must cut off Russia entirely from all commerce with the USA and all our partners and friends.

We need to wage TOTAL economic war on Russia, and that means we can't be held hostage to higher gas prices, lazy consumers, greedy oil companies and foreign dictators. That means we must start to accelerate the transition away from fossil fuels and making oil barons comfortable. We must transition to renewables as a matter of national security and the free world in order to wage economic war on Russia and end climate breakdown. The leader of EU sees this need already, so we have no excuse not to. Write to Manchin and tell him!

These existential threats are linked, and so are the others we face now. The USA must now restart progress. We and our allies must raise taxes to make this transition and support Ukraine freedom fighters and our alliance; NATO cannot deter Russia on the cheap, nor can our energy transition be done that way. Taxes must be raised. Military budgets across NATO must be beefed up. It will take millions of soldiers in Eastern Europe, not thousands. We must be ready for war in every way, including readiness to take out his nuclear weapons before he strikes us. I used to be opposed to missile defense or SDI/"Star Wars" but now we need it. Detente has ended and we face a Hitler, not a Breshnev.

Write to Biden now and tell him!

The fourth turning is now well and truly upon us. It is the late 1930s again folks!

  select smart religion survey
Posted by: Eric the Green - 02-23-2022, 04:14 PM - Forum: Religion, Spirituality and Astrology - Replies (1)

I saw brower's results somewhere but after a diligent search I could not find it. Perhaps he will repost here.

Wondering whether I should stop identifying myself as a "new ager" or "holistic health advocate" I took the selectsmart religion survey today. It's been almost a decade I think, but my results changed, in the wake of my recent switch from a New Thought church back to Unitarian-Universalist, and my rejection of anti-vax and other nefarious beliefs that some of my new age (former?) friends have. You can take the survey here: http://selectsmart.com/religion/
My results: (100% means the nearest match, not 100% agreement) same top 4 as before, but UU is now #1. Roman Catholic is no longer in last place, replaced by Islam.

Your top result is: Unitarian Universalism

Do millennials have a closet fascination with masculinity?
Posted by: JasonBlack - 02-23-2022, 09:43 AM - Forum: The Millennial Generation - Replies (6)

Millennials are the first generation to really open their arms to the most extreme tenants of feminism. On the surface, they'll talk about "toxic masculinity" this, "rape culture" that, and develop some of the most complicated and ever-shifting rules of engagement when it comes to gender relationships and dating, but when you look below the surface...is this really what they want? If we look at both of them separately

men:
- Call of Duty
- PUA/"How to be an Alpha Male" courses
- gym bro culture
- put a lot of effort into being a "badass" (but they are ashamed of this, and consider it a cardinal sin to pursue it overtly)
- RPGs, MMOs, first person shooters....video games all focus on strength, overcoming enemies, etc

women:
- 50 Shades of Grey
- tendency to hopelessly fall for "bad boys"
- "must be this tall to ride", size queens,
- demand supreme confidence from sexual partners
- growing contempt for male feminists who claim to be supportive and give them what they want

Action movies do well with millennials, but the more recent attempts to feminize that space, while giving them what they say they want, have tanked in recent years and been met with some serious backlash.

Neil Howe wrote in The 4th Turning and Generations about how millennials would eventually grow into a more conservative, sexually-differentiated generation, and the more I look at the trends...he just might be right.

Capitol Steps Shutting Down : End of an Era
Posted by: sbarrera - 02-22-2022, 08:01 AM - Forum: Entertainment and Media - Replies (1)

One of "The Fourth Turning" co-author William Strauss's legacies is the political comedy troupe Capitol Steps, which he cofounded in 1981.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capitol_Steps

https://www.youtube.com/user/CapitolSteps

Sadly to say, they are gone. Their last performance was in 2020, and they announced last year that they were shutting down for good.

https://dcist.com/story/21/01/13/comedy-...-pandemic/

Was it the pandemic that got them, or the partisan divide? Either or both could be the culprit. Certainly this era is not receptive to gentle political satire, only vitriolic mockery. The particular brand of political humor which Capitol Steps provided fit the 3T. Not so much this 4T, so it's not shocking to see them go. But it is sad.

  The Generational Culinary Cycle
Posted by: Lemanic - 02-20-2022, 08:53 PM - Forum: Society and Culture - Replies (5)

Let’s talk about food and drinks and what was and what we can expect from the future.

The Baby Boomers were born into the age of the new hot trend called “the frozen food section” with TV-dinners and frozen veggies and meat and thus their revolt was all about NOT that up until they became Yuppies. I can see the conformist Millennial like myself choosing the pre-packaged frozen food version of the Baby Boomer global food revolution in the new high, since I do it now. The Nomad GenX Food Truck culture is now already in the frozen food section where I live.

Also, we Millennials have entered a calorie consciousness revolution right now that aims to destigmatize food and focus on the more relevant terms “calorie surplus” and “calorie deficit”, destroying an entire industry in the process.

Does this look like a discussion worth chewing into?

What do you think are the major pros/cons of each current generation?
Posted by: JasonBlack - 02-18-2022, 04:10 PM - Forum: Generations - Replies (51)

Preface: I can be pretty blunt at times, so I should start with the obvious disclaimer that wonderful people exist in every generation. I've attempted to be even handed here and take a hard look at both the negatives and the positives (I'll be a little nicer to the zoomer kiddos, since they are the least accountable at this point). Needless to say, not every point I or anyone else makes will apply to you, so feel free to let that roll off your back.

Boomer Pros:
- industrious
- strong conviction
- have the spine to actually debate people. With millennials and zoomers, I have to use kiddy gloves (in the case of the latter, they are children, so I can forgive that), and Gen X usually just don't bother debating people in the first place.
- actually get their values from themselves rather than relying on outside
- assertive and direct. boomers know how to communicate. you know where you stand with them.
- unlike millennials, they....actually did shit to make meaningful civil rights progress

Boomer Cons:
- strong tendency to talk at rather than to people, which often leads to them not really listening and giving blanket, over-simplistic advice that doesn't work for whatever specific situation the person is talking about
- Turn even the most mundane thing into a moral talking point. sometimes it...really is just a job. you do it, attain your goal, and go home.
- They call them an "idealist generation" for a reason. as much as I admire the guts and conviction mentioned above, they often hold an almost teenage notion of justice mired in lofty rhetoric at the expense of practical plans of action. you're over 60 now. It's time to stop railing against authority and actually be the authority the world needs now. Being that rebellious when you're in a position of institutional power is dangerous.
- As a millennial, I always got the sense they were trying to groom me for some moral crusade and distrusted most of them. "great, so all you have to do is come up with the values and I'm the one who actually has to do the fighting? ...nah, that's not gonna happen"
- get overly worked up over things. It was annoying growing up and having to feel like I always had to be the calm one from like 7 years old.

13er Pros:
- rugged individualism is awesome. y'all are the least likely to rely on daddy government to give you a sense of purpose and protect you
- enterprising and resourceful
- strong protective instincts
- usually leave people alone and respect boundaries
- cliquish behavior is...kinda underrated. it makes much more sense to look out for your own and associate with people of similar interests and values.

13er Cons:
- being stoic and "strong and silent" all the time does not make you bad ass. it's way more bad ass to actually be assertive
- I get that you're over-correcting from your own childhood where you weren't given enough protection and affection, but helicopter parenting is not a good look.
- there is a difference between a healthy dose of self-reliance and being content with a deteriorating system. you care about your kids right? how are you supposed to ensure they have a better future if you won't do anything about the world going to hell in a hand basket?

Millennial Pros:
- increasingly, they're...actually willing to discuss real policy,
- seem to be the only ones interested in pragmatic solutions to this crisis
- more polite to retail and restaurant workers than boomers or Gen X
- generally care about being competent and will put effort into making sure they do things right
- contrary to popular opinion, millennials are not a selfish generation. they're a very socially minded generation willing to pay the costs to make things better

Millennial Cons:
- neuroses around self-sacrifice and guilt. if some millennials are doing a good job exercising civic responsibility, others are spiteful and basically want America to fail cuz "colonialism". The implication is that you cannot expect them to debate in good faith because they don't even share the basic assumption of "we want America to be more prosperous"
- reduce everything to demographics and make snap judgments about people's life circumstances based on like 4 factors
- conventional and obedient.
- demand other people be conventional and obedient
- stop trying to save the world and focus on your own life and looking out for your own friends and family
- bitch about boomers, only to....dutifully protest exactly the same causes their parents did. You serious mate?  Rolleyes
- you can be "liberal" or you can constantly police people's behavior, you cannot do both
- millennial feminism is the most atrocious ideology to pop up in American history since Jim Crow. a truly malignant, sarcastic and downright solipsistic value system that attempts to get all of the privileges of men with none of the responsibilities
- snippy passive-aggression
- it's okay to think you're special, but other people don't have an obligation to care

Zoomer Pros:
- those memes bro, they be dank. definitely the modern generation with the quickest wit and best sense of humor
- a lot more sweet and gentle than I remember being when I was younger (millennials were mostly bratty children, including me)
- they aren't just receptive to instruction, they actively seek it out and are respectful when you give it.
- zoomer conservatives even more based than their conservative boomer grandparents. they understand their views inside and out and are highly educated where it's actually important

Zoomer Cons:
- I get that you're young, but...there is more to having principles than just being compassionate.
- Even more passive-aggressive than millennials. with the latter, passive-aggression comes out in more overt episodes you can take note of. With zoomers, their entire communication style is a sliding scale between  I would punch someone my age in the face or ground my children for 2 months if they were that passive-aggressive with me.
- Zoomers have a well-developed sense of ettiquette. The problem is that it usually doesn't make any sense. for example, it's considered rude to call people without warning them first cuz "social anxiety". In other words...you feel a ton of responsibility to take care of other people's feelings, but none for taking care of your own feelings? That makes no sense at all.

What's your generation and how would you change your government?
Posted by: JasonBlack - 02-16-2022, 11:01 PM - Forum: Society and Culture - Replies (62)

I'm most interested in a pragmatic approach: how you would change things given the present circumstances, rather than what you would want them to be ideally (though you may include this as well after the fact).

I'll start:
generational archetype: Civic
political leanings: libertarian conservative

Some of my changes are as follows.

Overall Policy Goal: reward personal freedom and ambition as much as possible provided checks and balances and civic and environmental sustainability are maintained (I know that's kind of vague. More specifics listed below)

1) All political contributions over $100 are banned, and candidates can only spend a designated sum of their own money (say, $2,000,000) which would be regularly adjusted for inflation. You get success by achieving high performance, not by buying up the referee to rig the game.
2) Welfare is contingent on acts of community service. We will help you if you're willing to work, not if you aren't.
3) Weed is legalized and taxed. So are all other drugs. That money will be used initially to fund reparations for people incarcerated solely on drug charges, followed by funding a crack down on gangs of all sorts (from human traffickers, to Crips and Bloods, to Aryan Brotherhood)
4) Executive Orders are legal only a national emergency as declared by Congress
5) A Constitutional Amendment for data privacy and other forms of related privacy.
6) If you genuinely want to leave, we don't want you either, so we will be willing to pay for your relocation to another country. That way, if you stay, it is because you have chosen to do so.
7) Pay homeless people to plant trees. We don't have wait for fancy green technology to begin implementing common sense solutions. Naturally, they would be overseen by professional ecologists in order to reproduce the biodiversity of the native flora and fauna.
8) Corporate tax would be medium-low (low enough to keep jobs, high enough to give smaller businesses a leg up), and the proceeds would go largely toward grants for entrepreneurs to start small businesses, increase competition and encourage greater self-sufficiency, ambition and value creation for the local community.
9) Healthcare would be left up to the states, and the rest of the country could watch as 50 different experiments in healthcare policy took effect in order to watch the results.
10) Reasonable funds allocated to green technology R & D, but not to be implemented until both better infrastructure and more cost effective solutions have been developed (the culture of shaming poor people for burning fossil fuels in order to survive is disgusting and indecent)
11) Everyone takes an ASVAB-like test at 18. The higher you score, the more your vote counts. You can retake the test at any time to improve your score, and you get small bonuses for consistent years of being a net tax contributor, as well as larger bonuses for active duty and entrepreneurship/creating jobs. The test would all be multiple choice, with an encrypted test ID number so it would be impossible to discriminate based on race, sexual orientation, etc.
12) Abortion is illegal in cases other than rape or threat to the life of the mother. Sorry not sorry. Stop having sex with irresponsible bad boys and society.
13) Immigration policies that take advantage of brain drain (and for that matter, values drain). You get expedited citizenship of you get above a certain IQ score, come with STEM credentials or create a certain number of jobs by opening up a business.
14) ALL educational materials, if not free, are tax-deductable, including all non-fiction books.
15) At least 3 semesters of debate, 2 semesters of public speaking, 3 semesters of post-secondary life planning (college, trade school, budgeting skills, etc), are required to graduate high school.
16) Also included is a required internship once per week for grades 9-12.
17) Alimony cannot exceed the minimum for a living wage. None of this "I got $400,000 a year just by getting a divorce" nonsense....
18) All weapons, martial arts training and fitness-related expenses are tax deductible.
19) While we're at it, so are most art/music related expenses (with a few exceptions. ie, not $50,000 sound equipment for non-professionals, that has the potential to get a little absurd).
20) Grades K-12 would include 4 yearly trips to elderly homes with games and refreshments to encourage different generations to understand each other.
21) Required 2 years public service (doesn't have to be military. it can also be Peace Corps or an approved charity or volunteer organization).
22) Polluting activities are taxed in proportion to damages.
23) Police are federally funded, must complete a 2 year associate's degree, have regular mental health screening and wear body cams, but will receive a pay increase and additional pension benefits for the extra hurtles.
24) It is illegal to publish articles about alleged crimes until the person has been convicted. Rumors about alleged criminals only lead to trial-by-media, witch hunts and potential harm to persons who may be innocent.

  Generational Archetypes in Anime
Posted by: JasonBlack - 02-15-2022, 02:17 AM - Forum: Entertainment and Media - Replies (10)

For the sake of brevity, I've included only one character per anime per archetype (ex: for Black Lagoon, I could have also included Dutch as reactive Gen), with a few anime including characters from multiple archetypes.
For the sake of avoiding confusion, I avoided examples that would place generations out of order (ex: Lelouch vs Suzaku in Code Geass seems like Idealist Gen vs Civic Gen, but as they are the same age, this would not make sense).

Idealist
- Lelouch Lamperouge (Code Geass)
- All Might (My Hero Academia)
- Light Yagami (Death Note)
- Hoenheim (Full Metal Alchemist)
- Yahiko Myogin (Rurouni Kenshin)

Reactive
- Yusuke Yurameshi (Yu Yu Hakusho)
- Eraserhead (My Hero Academia)
- Monkey D Luffy (One Piece)
- Bando (Elfen Lied)
- Balalaika (Black Lagoon)
- Spike Spiegel (Cowboy Beebop)
- Kazuma Yagami (Kaze no Stigma)
- Vegeta (Dragonball Z)

Civic
- Izuku Midoriya (My Hero Academia)
- Tanjiro Kamado (Demon Slayer)
- Rock (Black Lagoon)
- Yuzuru Otonashi (Angel Beats)
- Tetsuya Kuroko (Kuroko no Basket)

Adaptive
- Kenshin Himura (Rurouni Kenshin)
- Tamaki Suo (Ouran Highschool Host Club)
- Kirito Kiragaya (Sword Art Online)
- Gohan (Dragon Ball Z)
- Shinji Ikari (Evangelion)
- Professor Oak (Pokemon)

honorable mention: Avatar isn't technically an anime, but I think we can solidly place Katara as Civic Gen and Uncle Iroh as Adaptive Gen
